Ulmus Wingham Elm Tree, New Variety

Ulmus 'Wingham' is a new variety of elm that has shown high resistance to Dutch Elm Disease. This fast-growing, attractive tree will tolerate coastal sites and urban pollution. The profuse flowers, which it produces from an early age, have proved a good host for the rare UK butterfly, the White-letter Hairstreak. Will grow to 7m in height in 10 years. Likely to form a large tree of more than 20m.

Likes full sun and rich, moist but free-draining soils. Ulmus x 'Wingham' was developed by an Italian research team. It was named as such by elm enthusiast Dr David Herling who first planted it at Wingham village in Kent where it has produced over one metre of growth a year on the local soil.
