Camellia japonica Black Lace-Japanese Camellia

Camellia japonica 'Black Lace' is a compact, evergreen shrub with with glossy green leaves which are darker than most, hence the name. It has a fairly upright habit and produces red flowers during winter, between January and March. These are displayed magnificently against the dark foliage. Prefers neutral to acid, loamy, well drained but moist soils, not chalk. Flowers can scorch if exposed to early morning sun especially when frosty, therefore avoid planting in an East-facing position. Ultimate height 5m, spread 3m.

This Camellia is a great shrub for providing year-round interest as the evergreen, glossy leaves are attractive in their own right. The double red flowers are a welcome sight in late winter and early spring.
Container plants will keep, if necessary, for many months in their containers prior to planting. If you receive the plants during the spring or summer when they will be growing, then it will be best to plant within a week or two making sure that the plants are kept well watered in the containers until planting and also that they are protected or supported to prevent them from blowing over and damaging branches. If you receive the plants during the winter then they can be kept until early spring before planting with occasional watering to prevent them drying out. Again, protect them from being blown over. They will not be harmed by frost but do not attempt to plant them in the ground when they, or the ground, are frozen. Take care to plant at the correct depth so that the surface of the rootball is at the same level as the ground. They will require watering during the first summer to prevent the ground from drying out. Take care not to over or under water - you can tell by feeling the soil to see if it is dry. Trees should be securely staked to prevent them from rocking and breaking off new root growth.
