Hydrangeas are loving the weather this summer!

The summer weather might not be delighting everybody, but Hydrangeas are very happy this year! These hardy, woody shrubs are at their happiest in moist but free-draining soil and they love a bit of dappled shade. Our advice is to avoid planting them in south-facing positions because they really don't enjoy very dry soil. The climbing Hydrangea is especially suitable for a north-facing wall, providing an excellent, self-clinging covering for walls and fences.

There's no doubt that these stunning flowering shrubs make outstanding specimen plants for the garden. In addition to the traditional mop-head Hydrangeas, there are many different varieties, including the popular paniculata types with their charming, lantern-shaped flowers.

Did you know that the name hydrangea stems from the Greek words for water, hydros and jar, angos. The plant was thought to resemble an ancient water pitcher in shape. However, it is especially appropriate because these shrubs love regular moisture!
