A Living Gift to bring some Christmas cheer

There's no hiding from the fact that Christmas is coming!

But you don't need to join in the race to purchase plastic in all its disposable forms. Gifting a living, growing plant represents the antithesis of participating in a throw-away society. Indeed, the recipient of such a thoughtful and delightful 'feelgood present' will be adding to the biodiversity of an outdoor setting. Not only do shrubs and trees provide habitats for wildlife but they also help to purify the air, absorb pollution, soak up water and visually enhance their surroundings. Studies have shown that plants can help people to feel good in an emotional sense too.

Here at English Woodlands tree and shrub nursery, set in the heart of East Sussex near Heathfield, we can offer advice if you're not sure which plant species to consider. There are small shrubs that might be perfect for a doorstep or even a window box plus larger specimens for the borders. Some prefer sunshine and a sheltered spot, whilst others are happier in the shade. There are multiple bonuses in store for those who are looking for living gifts. Firstly, they don't need to be wrapped! Just decorate the pots with ribbons, add a tag to the foliage and you're done! Secondly, the recipient of your gift is unlikely to receive duplicates - and even if they did, no two plants are exactly the same and many look even better when planted in multiples. Last, but by no means least, your present will be a lasting reminder of your friendship and should grow and thrive in the years to come.

Here are a few ideas for those who are seeking something for a special person this Christmas:

Who doesn't love a Skimmia? Pictured is Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' It's a compact male Skimmia which has green leaves and dark red flower buds that last throughout winter. The white flowers open in spring, which prolongs the season of interest. These shrubs can be included in a container display or can be planted in the border for winter interest. They look great in a pot and will bring a burst of joy throughout the winter.

Scented flowers in late winter are just one of the attractions of Daphne. This one is Daphne odora 'Aureomarginata', otherwise known as Daphne 'Bois-Joli-Odorant'. It's a demure evergreen shrub until the sweet smellng pink flowers burst open from purple-pink buds in January. Position it near to a path or close to the front door in order to gain full benefit. This gift just gets better as the weeks pass!

There are few people who can resist a beautiful Camellia, and there are many varieties from which to choose. Camellia 'Perfect White' is, perhaps, one of the most beautiful for those who enjoy the subtlety of white flowers. It can flower from November right through until March, depending on weather conditions. Many Camellias will be happy in a large pot. Provide them with acidic compost and keep them well fed and watered. Avoid east-facing positions where the flowers can be scorched by morning sun. A gift of beauty is always welcomed!

There are structural beauties too, for those who are looking for something spectacular. Trees with multiple, clear stems create garden impact that is far superior to sculpture. Even a simple, spiral stem has a magical quality that will be admired by all who pass by, especally when it catches the light.

Of course there are fruit trees such as apples, pears, cherries, plums, fig and cobnuts, all of which would make a wonderful gift. Or you might like to purchase a glossy, evergreen holly which is bursting with red berries, such as Ilex 'Nellie Stevens, pictured below.

But if you just find it too difficult to choose, English Woodlands is delighted to provide Gift Vouchers which can be sent to you or direct to your loved ones, in the post. These can be ordered from the website and can be redeemed online, for home delivery.
